How to Paint Your First Plaster Figure

Oct 11, 2026 | Painting Tips | 0 comments

A blank figure gives you room to make something your own. Start with a few colors, take your time, and enjoy watching the details come to life.

Gather a simple painting kit

Set out water-based acrylic craft paints, a medium brush for larger areas, a small brush for details, a water cup, a palette, and paper towels. Cover your table before you begin. Choose two or three main colors so your first project feels manageable.

Start with a dry, clean figure

Gently brush away loose surface dust with a soft, dry brush. Avoid soaking the plaster. If you choose to use a primer, select one suitable for your paint and follow its instructions. Let every layer dry before continuing.

Paint the larger areas first

Apply a thin coat to the largest areas, then let it dry. A second thin coat usually gives you more control than one thick coat. Rotate the figure as you work, holding an unpainted or dry area rather than touching fresh paint.

Add details a little at a time

Use your smaller brush for eyes, lines, and other finishing touches. Wipe excess paint from the brush before adding a small detail. If a color goes outside the area you intended, let it dry and paint over it. Your figure does not have to match a sample.

Finish and display

Allow the paint to dry according to its label. If you want a protective finish, use a sealer compatible with your paint, follow its directions, and try it on a small area first. Keep your finished plaster figure dry and handle it gently.

Make it your own

Try a familiar color scheme, a seasonal palette, or something completely unexpected. Too Qute Crafts figures come unpainted, so the final colors and finishing touches are yours to choose.
